Reading to my kids is absolutely one of my favorite activities that we do together, so I get excited when I come across a really superb children’s book.
Alphablock by Christopher Franceschelli showed up in a box on my front doorstep this morning, actually, which proves again that my mother is amazing at finding the coolest kid books out there!
Alphablock is fresh off the presses (published this month, August 6th to be exact) and might just be my new favorite ABC book. It’s small, but about 2.5 inches thick and sturdy enough for the most reckless readers. The bold bright colors and stylized graphics are instant eye candy for kids….and adults! But, the most captivating thing about this book is how the cut-out form of each letter creates a tactile learning element and then blends into the corresponding picture when the page is turned. You can see it below on the “I is for Ice Cream” pages.
Alphablock was a gift for my 1-year-old daughter but my almost-4-year-old son was also engrossed in the beautiful pages. Somehow I was able to snap a (grainy) picture of them looking at the book together with my phone, an amazing feat….my daughter is on the move! They’re looking at my favorite page in the book, “M is for Moon” (picture a dark cityscape)….although “P is for Pencils” (doodles and pencil shavings on lined paper) is a close second.
Alphablock is worth a buy and would also make a great non-toy birthday or baby shower gift. Enjoy!
