It’s safe to say that we are nearing the end of the official Christmas season.  But the idea of Christmas and what it means all year long should not be forgotten for us moms……for anyone.  Our contributor Megan sat down on Christmas Eve night and wrote out her thoughts about the eternal connection that all of of us mamas have with Mary.  As we step into the New Year….these thoughts should not be fleeting.  Seal them to your hearts.

Mary, did you know?  Did you know that the day you delivered, the day that was as real and raw as any birth story, would one day be glamorized?  Did you know that I’d look at your manger scene as quaint, surrounded by the glitz of decorations and the alluring scent of over indulgence?

Mary, did you know?  Did you know that as you held your new baby, as you wrapped his thin flailing arms in tattered sheets, that I’d forget the fragility of your son? That I’d hear the Christmas story read and accept the familiar words as mere Christmas cheer?  Did you know that God’s gift to me, your sweet baby, would be forgotten in the midst of gift giving and receiving?

Mary, did you know?  Did you know that as you tried to soothe his weak cries that I’d forget my connection to you as a mother?  That as I rocked my own dear son to sleep this night, I’d suddenly remember that my baby is not so different than yours?  That though his life will cause me fear and doubt and heartache that the deep love I feel for him will be worth it?

Mary, did you know?  Did you know that on this late Christmas Eve, I’d ponder as you did and remember that Christmas started with a son?  It started with a gift.  And it ended with a promise.  That all the pain and tears that bind our mothers’ hearts together, force me to remember that dark and lonely night when I’m sure you felt alone and forgotten, when it felt hard to understand, that your baby boy would one day save us all.
