A little winter poem…

snowstorm1

All this winter hibernation has been inspiring my inner poet….a little something different on mcg today….

Today I drove through a snowstorm.

A white-out, they call it, where nothing
exists beyond the muting cloak
of snow, that is wondrous and sedate

and terrifying in equal parts.
The car air felt thin so I barely breathed
while exhuming the road with my eyes

for the thin yellow line that was,
in fact, useless against voodooed
vehicles: sedans and sport cars

and giant, hulking semi trucks
bewitched by the road, beckoning
them to drive too fast and evoking

thoughts of my own death in their wake.
A funeralesque quartet played on
the radio, and I thought how

appropriate and alone this feels,
like riding a tin can through space. Until
my daughter in the back seat woke up

and saw the pompous white drapery
and the labyrinthine window frost
and the milky spirals of breath
curl from her baby lips, and then she

laughed and laughed and laughed and laughed.
